Kanzanji Temple, founded in the Heian period (year 810) by the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi, is said to have been established to purify the hearts of travelers.
During the Edo period, it flourished as a renowned temple in the Tokai region, receiving a sacred seal from Tokugawa Ieyasu, who had deep ties to Hamamatsu.
Surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of Lake Hamana, this historic temple has long been cherished as a beloved scenic spot.
In 1953, the Kanzanji Tourism Association was established, and by 1958, the hot springs were officially opened.
Over the years, numerous leisure facilities, including a nearby amusement park, a ropeway, and sightseeing cruises, were developed, transforming Kanzanji Onsen into a premier tourist destination in the Hamamatsu and Lake Hamana area.
Today, it continues to attract countless visitors.
Located in Hamamatsu City in western Shizuoka Prefecture, Kanzanji Onsen is surrounded by the natural beauty of Lake Hamana. This brackish lake, where seawater and freshwater mix, features a mild climate and mineral-rich waters, making it ideal for aquaculture. The area is renowned for eel, oysters, and nori farming and is home to over 700 species of marine life.
Furthermore, the area is renowned for its seafood, including wild tiger pufferfish (torafugu) from the nearby Enshu Sea, as well as agricultural products like mandarins and onions grown in Hamamatsu's warm climate. Visitors can savor these local specialties in the restaurants and hotels of Kanzanji Onsen, offering a true taste of Hamamatsu and Lake Hamana.
